http://worldmuslimcongress.blogspot.com/2007/05/50-years-of-imamat-aga-khan.html

On July 11, 2007, his highness Karim Aga Khan will be entering the 50th year of Imamat of the Shia Ismaili Muslim Community. The Shia Ismaili Musilm Community is preparing for this celebaratory event called Golden Jubilee of Khushhali, congratulations! May Allah bless him with many more years.

We are pleased to acknowledge his leadership in the community of nations in leading the charity work, the Aga Khan Development Newtwork is world renowned in the development and self help projects in uplifiting the down trodden in Asia and Africa.

In a time when Muslim community is tarnished with unqualified negativities, the work of AKDN and the partnership walks is very uplifting to Islam and Muslims.

Aga Khan has taken up projects of restoring the glory of Muslims; some among them are ; the tomb of Humayun, the Mogul King of India, building parks in Cairo, establishement of the Pluralism Center in Canada, instituting Archictecture awards to encourage Islamic Art… and much more.

Insha Allah, I will be writing and forwarding material as the event approaches.

May Allah help lift the downtrodden and put all communities and nations on a level playing field, and we thank HH Aga Khan for taking the leadership role.

Subject: The Ismailis in the Middle Ages: A History of Survival, A Search
for Salvation

“None of that people should be spared, not even the babe in its cradle.” With these chilling words, the Mongol warlord Genghis Khan declared his intention to destroy the Ismailis, one of the most intellectually and politically significant Muslim communities of medieval Islamdom. The massacres that followed convinced observers that this powerful voice of Shi’i Islam had been forever silenced.

Little was heard of our people for centuries, until our recent and dramatic emergence from obscurity. We now exist as a dynamic and thriving community established in over twenty-five countries. How different from the dark days when Alamut and our other fortresses fell one by one before the Mongol hordes! Hundreds of years later, the Mongols are no more, but our jamat is eagerly preparing to rejoice. As of today, there are exactly fifty days before Ismailis across the world celebrate the fiftieth anniversary of the accession of our Imam.

The countdown to the Golden Jubilee has begun.

On this occasion, I would like to share with all of you, my family and friends, that my book, “The Ismailis in the Middle Ages: A History of Survival, A Search for Salvation,” has just been released by Oxford University Press. The book explains what happened during the most obscure period between what appeared to have been our jamat’s total annihilation, and our modern, almost phoenix-like renaissance. A full description of the book can be found by going to any of the following websites and doing a search for “Shafique Virani”:

If you feel that this would be a useful book for people to read, please take a moment to go to the website of your local public or university library and request them to purchase it. Most library websites have a page for people to make book recommendations. All author’s proceeds for “The Ismailis in the Middle Ages” are being donated to the AKDN, and an announcement to this
effect is on the cover of the book.

With warmest wishes,

Shafique
