SENIOR officials of Qatar’s Social Development Center (SDC), led by Dr Noora al-Hanzab and general manager Amal al-Mannai, were among the 200-odd participants from 31 countries at the inaugural World Congress of Muslim Philanthropists in Istanbul last month.
According to an SDC communique, prominent among those who attended the conference was HE Sheikha Mayassa bint Hamad al-Thani.
Representatives of more than 100 contributors supporting foundations and NGOs came together at the Istambul meet for the 3-day congress under the theme ‘Facing challenges and finding solutions’, attracting government officials and academic speakers from all continents.
The congress aimed to create strong philanthropic networks, making better use of available funds and human resources to combat critical global issues such as poverty, HIV/Aids, poor education, environmental degradation and religious extremism, the press note said.
Besides Sheikha Mayassa, the Istambul event was attended by Doha Academy founder Sheikha Aisha bint Faleh al-Thani and world leaders including the Organisation of Islamic Conference secretary general Ekmeleddin Ihsanoglu, Turkish Prime Minister Recep Tayyip Erdogan, UK Minister of International Development Shahid Malik, UN secretary general’s advisor Dr Nafis Sadiq, special assistant to the US Secretary of State Farah Pandit and World Council of Religions for Peace chairman William Vendley.
Speakers stressed the need to focus on education because of its ability to empower current and future generations in developing effective solutions to alleviate poverty and lead to peace.
Sheikha Mayassa called upon philanthropists to be strategic in their thinking and giving and develop partnerships to reduce overlap and inefficiencies.
